The phenomena are caused by a low pressure system currently situated in the Balkans. A 36-year-old woman and her two children aged 18 and six have died after being struck by lightning in Kapiri Mposhi, Central Province commissioner of police Lombe Kamukoshi has said. Ms Kamukoshi said in an interview yesterday that this happened on Saturday 6 of February 2016 in Mukonchi around 15:00 hours while the family was working in a maize field during a downpour.

A teacher was killed after he was struck by lightning at a secondary school in Jalan Wau. In Thursday's incident, the 32-year-old teacher and four of his colleagues were seeking shelter from the rain when tragedy struck at around 4.20pm.

An African Apostolic Church member died on Monday (25/01/2016), while four others sustained various injuries after they were struck by a lightning bolt during a prayer session at an open space in Nyatsime, Chitungwiza. Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the incident and urged people to take precautionary measures to avoid fatalities or injuries when it is raining.
