A lot of flashes and strong precipitation are recorded over the Ionian Sea during the morning of the 18th of March. The activity is gradually moving towards the Greek coasts. The strong precipitation and lightning, is expected to affect Greece in the following hours.

Exotic Birds Killed By Golf Ball-Sized Hail (18/3/2016)

A violent hailstorm that dropped ice pellets the size of golf balls has killed eight exotic birds at a zoo in the US state of Texas. A spokeswoman for the Fort Worth Zoo said five flamingos, a pelican, an ibis and a black-necked swan chick were found dead after Thursday's storm.

The maritime area east of Sicily to the Greek coasts is under heavy lightning activity. Some flashes are recorded over the maritime area west of Sardine and Corsica. Our forecasts show that the activity will affect the southern Italian mainland. Greece is expected to experience lightning during the first hours and morning of Friday, 18th of March.

The maritime area of central Mediterranean in experiencing heavy activity on the morning of Wednesday, 16th of March 2016. The effected region extends from the maritime area west of Corsica to the coasts of Algeria and Tunisia to the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. The activity is caused by a low pressure system cantered over the affected area. It expected to continue during the whole day and possibly the 17th of March.

Southern Italy and Sicily and also the Ionian coasts of Greece and Ionian Islands are currently (morning of 13th of March) receiving numerous lightning flashes. Activity is also recorded in the maritime area between Greece, Italy and Libya. According to our forecasts, the activity will continue during the day, and affect mostly Greece.

Serbia declares state of emergency due to flood threat after heavy rain (11/3/2016)

The Serbian government declared a state of emergency on Thursday amid fears of widespread flooding that could force thousands to leave their homes following days of heavy rain that is expected to continue overnight. Authorities evacuated some 120 people in southwestern Serbia earlier this week after rivers overflowed their banks, flooding hundreds of homes and large tracts of farmland.

Five persons were killed and three injured when lightning struck them during a recent hailstorm in Rajasthan which also damaged crops in 1007 villages in many districts, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Gulabchand Kataria said on Wednesday.

Lightning strikes start fires and damage buildings in Southern California (9/3/2016)

Lightning strikes set trees and buildings alight as the powerful El Nino storm continued to cause havoc across California. Video footage shows a palm tree bursting into flames after it was hit in Los Angeles as snow, flash floods and high winds battered southern parts of the state on Monday. A fire sparked by one of the bolts caused tens of thousands of dollars at a local business. Twitter user Ken Chung, who recorded the footage while heading to work, said he immediately dialed 911 to report the blaze.

Thunderstorm knocks out power at Los Angeles airport (8/3/2016)

A thunderstorm knocked out power across Los Angeles International Airport on Monday (Mar 7), delaying more than 100 flights. LAX spokeswoman Nancy Castles said back-up generators were started as the storm hit shortly after 6.00am (10.00pm Singapore time) and power was restored in all terminals within an hour. "Arriving flights to LAX have been slowed down and during the storm cell two flights (were) diverted to Ontario International Airport," she said.

Lightning strikes in Pune, India claims life of 18-year-old boy (3/3/2016)

An 18-year-old boy died in Pune after being struck by lighting on Wednesday evening. The deceased, identified as Akshay Bhalshankar, was playing games on his mobile when the tragedy occurred. Another 14-year-old boy Ram Chandane, Akshay’s neighbour, was rushed to hospital, and is in the ICU.
